18,792 steps in the city…
We started off meandering through the Ben Thanh Market – a huge indoor marketplace…where we picked up a couple of Under Armour shirts for $6.50 each! And guess what, we’re still wearing them 7 years later!
Next we made our way down to the Bitexco Financial Tower, then back up to the Saigon Opera House, City Hall (aka Hồ Chí Minh City People’s Committee), then took a break and got some food (bun cha) and a cold drink ($2.40 for the meal and drink).
Now re-energized, we continued on to see the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, Independence Palace, took 2 hours to go through the War Remnants Museum (this is a tough stop, but very worth while), and drank some more water and blue Fanta along the way. As we were walking around, we discovered a group of ladies making and selling fresh Vietnamese sandwiches from their cooler. They looked really good, and there was a crowd of locals stopping to get sandwiches, so we got in line for one too! It was only $0.65 and tasted great!
As we walked the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, it was so fun seeing all the scooters weaving through the intersections. Eventually, we made it up to Tân Định Catholic Church – a pink church. Finally, after 18,792 steps, we ordered an Uber (or Grab) back to our hotel, then walked across the street for some dinner that we brought back to our hotel.
