City, LOTR sites, and food 😊

After our first shower in 6 days and a refreshing night’s sleep in a hotel, we explored Wellington, New Zealand and some LOTR sites. We started at Old St Paul’s Cathedral, stopped by the Beehive (NZ’s parliament building), found where the hobbits hid from the Nazgul, hiked down to the Rohirrim encampment, popped into the Embassy Theatre (where they premiered the Lord of the Rings films), drove up to Mount Victoria Lookout for a scenic view of Wellington, then drove back down to eat some fish and chips at Mt Vic Chippery (which was just around the corner from the theatre). Side note: our favorite fish and chips was still from the UK.

After enjoying our meal by the water, we drove over to the Weta Cave – the bookshop connected to the studio behind the magic of LOTR. Then it was back on the road again! We stopped at a spot along the Hutt River – which was filmed for Anduin River scenes in LOTR, the Gardens of Isengard (and where they filmed the orcs chopping down trees for the fires of Isengard), tried to see the section of the river where Aragorn washed up on shore (but it was in a residential area), and finally made it to Rivendell – where we camped for $6 for the night! So cool!
