More LOTR locations, beautiful nature, and fun hikes.
After sleeping in our car in Rivendell, we woke up and hiked around a bit. They had several informative signs and a replica of the gate – such a cool stop! When we finished, we continued our drive on to Putangirua Pinnacles – where they filmed Aragorn going into the mountain to persuade the dead army to join him in the fight against Sauron.
Next, we stopped by another spot where they filmed a scene for the River Anduin (4 different rivers in NZ were actually used for these scenes), saw the Mangawhero Falls – where Gollum caught a fish and Faramir catches him, then finished the day out with some sunset pictures of what we thought was Mount Doom…but turned out to actually be Mount Ruapehu. Mount Doom was the next mountain behind the one we were looking at. But it was still epic and looked like Mordor!
I think one of the reasons we loved New Zealand so much is that both Lisa and I love nature and hiking, and that’s basically what we did while searching for all these Lord of the Rings filming locations!
