Mount Doom to Hobbiton
Instead of tackling the entire 20km hike, we decided to sleep in a bit, get a late start, and just do part of the Tongariro Crossing (we tackled about 7km of the northern circuit). On the way up to Mount Doom (aka Mt Ngauruhoe), we stopped by Tongariro Ski Club Inc (Whakapapa) to see another area where they filmed scenes from Mordor for LOTR. Along our hike, we got to see Taranaki Falls.
Once we finished our hike, we had some PB&J sandwiches, then continued our roadtrip. We stopped by Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland (but opted not to pay the $32 to hike the area), then on to the town of Roturua – where we picked up some more groceries from PAK’nSAVE, and finally parked and slept about 2km away from Hobbiton – which we explore the next day!
